🐕 Dog Breeding & Welfare Science 2025

When aesthetics override welfare — the science behind selective breeding harms

Brachycephalic Breeds Crisis

⚠️ French bulldogs, English bulldogs, pugs: 50-90% affected by Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)
⚠️ Severely affected dogs: struggle to breathe at rest; cannot exercise normally; suffer chronic hypoxia
⚠️ French bulldog: became most registered breed in UK (2018); now subject to veterinary welfare campaigns

BOAS causes lifelong respiratory suffering. Affected dogs cannot thermoregulate, exercise, or sleep normally. Many require surgery. Despite widespread veterinary warnings, public demand driven by social media aesthetics continues to drive breeding of extreme-conformation dogs. Norway banned breeding of bulldogs and cavalier King Charles spaniels in 2022 as a welfare measure. The Netherlands, Netherlands, and Denmark have similar restrictions.

Genetic Disease Burden

Breed-specific genetic diseases represent a systemic welfare problem from closed studbooks and founder effects. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels: 70%+ develop syringomyelia (brain pressing through skull, causing chronic pain) by age 6. Dachshunds: 20-25% develop intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) causing paralysis and severe pain. German Shepherds: hip dysplasia affects 20%+ without selective testing. Labrador Retrievers: progressive retinal atrophy, exercise-induced collapse.

⚠️ Estimated 50%+ of purebred dogs will develop a breed-specific health condition causing welfare harm

Puppy Farming

Large-scale commercial breeding operations (puppy farms/mills) prioritize volume over welfare. Breeding dogs are kept in barren conditions with inadequate socialization, veterinary care, and human contact. Puppies sold online lack proper socialization, show higher rates of behavioral problems, and are often sick at purchase. UK "Lucy's Law" (2020) banned third-party puppy sales; similar legislation in numerous US states. Responsible breeding requires health testing, socialization, and lifelong breeder support.
