The Scale of the Problem

Aquaculture now produces more fish for human consumption than wild fisheries. Approximately 80-100 billion farmed fish are slaughtered annually — more individual animals than any other farmed species including chickens. Yet fish welfare receives a fraction of the research attention, regulatory scrutiny, and public concern given to mammalian species. The scientific case for fish sentience is now well-established; the welfare conditions in most aquaculture operations remain inadequate. 2025 represents a critical inflection point as the first meaningful welfare standards begin to reach commercial scale.

🚨 Major Welfare Issues in Aquaculture

Slaughter without stunning: The vast majority of farmed fish are killed by asphyxiation (removal from water), live chilling, CO₂ narcosis (aversive), or simply being processed alive. None of these methods reliably render fish unconscious before killing. Effective electrical or percussive stunning exists but is rarely used commercially.
Stocking density: Many aquaculture operations stock fish at densities that prevent normal movement, cause aggression, fin damage, and elevated cortisol — chronic stress indicators. Atlantic salmon in sea cages may have less than a bathtub of water per fish at harvest density.
Sea lice infestations: Sea lice cause painful tissue damage on salmon; treatments (chemical, mechanical delousing) are themselves welfare-costly. A major driver of aquaculture antibiotic use and a significant welfare burden in Atlantic salmon farming.
Water quality: Poor oxygen levels, temperature extremes, and high ammonia cause significant chronic stress in intensive operations. Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) can control these but require high capital investment.
Handling during harvesting: Crowding, pumping, and live transport create acute stress episodes. Crowding before harvest to reduce feeding can last days; associated with sustained stress hormone elevation.

EFSA Opinion (2021→implementation): European Food Safety Authority published comprehensive species-specific welfare opinions covering salmon, trout, sea bass, sea bream, carp, and others. Forming basis for EU aquaculture welfare regulation, expected 2025-2026.
Norway leadership: Norwegian salmon industry — world's largest — has adopted percussive stunning for salmon at several major processors. Industry welfare index (FishWell) tracking progress. Salmon is the lead species for welfare improvement due to commercial scale and NGO attention.
