Aquaculture now produces more fish for human consumption than wild fisheries. Approximately 80-100 billion farmed fish are slaughtered annually โ more individual animals than any other farmed species including chickens. Yet fish welfare receives a fraction of the research attention, regulatory scrutiny, and public concern given to mammalian species. The scientific case for fish sentience is now well-established; the welfare conditions in most aquaculture operations remain inadequate. 2025 represents a critical inflection point as the first meaningful welfare standards begin to reach commercial scale.
