The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) is one of conservation's greatest recovery stories. Reduced to the brink of extinction in the mid-20th century by organochlorine pesticide (DDT) contamination causing reproductive failure, peregrines have recovered dramatically following pesticide restrictions and are now nesting successfully on city buildings across Europe and North America.
Organochlorine pesticides bioaccumulate in the food chain, reaching high concentrations in apex predators like peregrines. DDT causes eggshell thinning — eggs break before hatching. By the 1970s, peregrines had been eliminated from most of eastern North America and had declined catastrophically across Europe. DDT prohibition and captive breeding reintroduction programs enabled remarkable population recovery. The UK population, which reached a low of approximately 360 pairs in the 1960s, now exceeds 1,500 pairs.
Peregrines have colonized urban environments extensively, nesting on cathedrals, office buildings, power stations, and bridge towers. Urban peregrine welfare benefits include: abundant pigeon prey, absence of the egg theft and persecution common in rural areas, and human interest generating monitoring and protection. Urban peregrines typically have high breeding success relative to rural pairs.

Peregrines are the most prized falconry birds globally. Captive peregrines used in falconry require species-appropriate housing (weathering areas with privacy and space for wing exercise), feeding on natural prey or appropriate substitutes, and trained handling that minimizes stress. Well-kept falconry birds have welfare considerations distinct from wild birds but requiring equal attention.
