Working Animal Welfare

200 million working animals support livelihoods across the developing world — the welfare science of what good working conditions look like and how to achieve them

Approximately 200 million working animals — horses, donkeys, mules, oxen, camels, and dogs — provide critical support for livelihoods, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Many of these animals live and work in conditions that cause preventable suffering: overloading, harness injuries, inadequate veterinary care, insufficient water and feed, and overwork. Improving working animal welfare improves both animal lives and the productivity and livelihoods of the human families who depend on them.

The Welfare Gap

Working animals in low-income countries frequently suffer from: malnutrition (often working while severely underweight); harness and yoke sores from poor-fitting equipment; untreated injuries and disease (veterinary access is minimal in many areas); overloading beyond safe carrying capacity; inadequate water during work; and lack of rest days. These welfare failures are not primarily due to owner cruelty — they reflect poverty, lack of veterinary services, inadequate knowledge, and inappropriate equipment.

Effective Interventions

Organizations like the Brooke Hospital for Animals and SPANA work directly in communities to improve working animal welfare through:

These programs demonstrate that welfare improvement and livelihood improvement go together — a compelling case for donor support.
