Abalone Welfare in Intensive Tank Aquaculture Systems

Abalone farming has expanded globally as wild stocks have collapsed, but the welfare needs of these marine gastropods in captive systems are poorly understood.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The welfare science of abalone is at an early stage, but their demonstrated responses to noxious stimuli and complex reef ecology suggest that intensive farming environments create welfare problems we have not yet characterised. Overcrowding, dietary inadequacy, poor water quality and inability to exhibit natural grazing behaviour are all candidate welfare concerns. Development of validated welfare indicators specific to abalone is a research priority for the growing global industry.
