Arctic char is a cold-water salmonid increasingly farmed in Iceland and Norway, with welfare considerations relevant to its cold-adapted biology and sensitive stress responses.
Welfare concerns include temperature stress if water temperature rises above optimal ranges, crowding-induced aggression and fin erosion in hierarchical groups, handling stress during routine management, and pre-slaughter crowding. Icelandic spring water RAS systems provide excellent water quality but high stocking densities remain a challenge. Species-appropriate stunning protocols are being developed.
