Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) is a highly valued aquaculture species farmed intensively in Australia, Southeast Asia, and emerging US markets. Welfare optimisation is increasingly commercial priority.
Barramundi welfare management centres on size uniformity, oxygen management, and minimising handling stress. Cannibalism of smaller fish by larger conspecifics requires regular grading — a welfare compromise where the intervention itself causes stress but prevents ongoing predation. Temperature management in RAS systems maintains welfare-positive conditions year-round. Slaughter by electrical stunning followed by ice slurry is the recommended humane method. Pre-harvest crowding without feed withdrawal of more than 24 hours is a welfare concern.
