Bay scallops are farmed in the eastern United States and increasingly elsewhere, with their welfare in captive systems requiring precautionary consideration given growing evidence about bivalve sentience.
Whether scallops experience pain in a morally significant sense remains an open scientific question. However, their complex sensory systems including multiple eyes and their active escape behaviour suggest some capacity for negative states. Repeated handling during commercial operations causes stress responses. The precautionary approach supports minimising unnecessary handling and ensuring rapid death during slaughter.
