Bighead carp is a keystone species in Chinese polyculture aquaculture, and its welfare within complex multi-species systems is increasingly studied.
Bighead carp welfare within polyculture systems is shaped by stocking density, oxygen availability, and the interactions between species. High summer temperatures combined with dense phytoplankton blooms can cause dramatic oxygen crashes that kill thousands of fish rapidly. While bighead carp are relatively robust and adapted to fluctuating conditions, chronic overcrowding impairs growth, increases disease susceptibility, and limits natural foraging behaviour. Improving aeration technology and monitoring oxygen levels are the most impactful welfare interventions for this widely farmed species.
