Channel catfish are one of the most widely farmed fish species in North America. Their welfare in intensive pond systems is shaped by stocking density, water quality management and handling practices.
Catfish in intensive pond systems face chronic low-level hypoxia during summer months when algal oxygen demand and thermal stratification reduce dissolved oxygen to stressful levels. Fish crowded at the surface show elevated cortisol and reduced immune function, increasing susceptibility to bacterial diseases including columnaris and enteric septicaemia. Harvest seining involves intensive crowding and handling that causes scale loss, physical injury and acute stress. The combination of poor water quality, high stocking density and infrequent feeding in some systems creates chronic welfare deficits that are difficult to detect without systematic monitoring.
