Cobia is one of the fastest-growing marine aquaculture species globally, with welfare challenges from its large size, open-water ecology, and sensitivity to handling and crowding.
Cobia in sea cages at commercial densities show fin damage, elevated stress biomarkers, and suppressed immunity. Their fast growth rate means welfare conditions during the relatively short production cycle still accumulate significant welfare impact. Offshore cage systems expose fish to rough water conditions that can cause physical stress. Land-based recirculating systems may provide better welfare control but are more energy-intensive. Welfare standards specific to cobia are urgently needed.
