Research demonstrates their capacity for learning, memory, and pain avoidance. In aquaculture settings, high-density housing without environmental complexity increases cannibalism and chronic stress. Providing refuges, visual barriers, and varied prey items substantially improves welfare in both research and commercial contexts. The high cognitive capacity of cuttlefish means environmental impoverishment is particularly harmful.
