European Eel Welfare in Intensive Aquaculture: Stress and Handling

European eels are farmed intensively despite their critically endangered status, with welfare concerns around crowding, handling stress, and slaughter methods for a species with complex pain and stress physiology.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Intensive eel farming involves extremely high stocking densities that cause chronic stress and immune suppression. Eels in crowded tanks develop skin damage, fin erosion, and elevated disease susceptibility. Conventional slaughter by live gutting, skinning, or salt bath immersion causes prolonged suffering given eel physiology. Electrical stunning is more humane but not universally adopted. Wild-caught glass eels experience severe stress during transport, with high mortality in some supply chains.
