European sea bass farmed in Mediterranean net pens experience significant welfare challenges from high stocking densities and handling stress.
Sea bass are sentient fish with clear stress responses to crowding, handling, and poor water quality. Chronic crowding impairs growth, causes fin damage, and increases disease susceptibility. The pre-slaughter period involving crowding, air exposure, and inappropriate stunning methods can cause significant suffering. Evidence-based stocking density limits and mandatory effective stunning would improve welfare substantially.
