Largemouth bass welfare in recreational fishing is primarily determined by handling practices during catch-and-release. Research shows that lip-gripping holding devices cause jaw injury, while vertical holding of large fish causes additional spinal stress. Minimising air exposure to under 30 seconds, using wet hands, and releasing fish at the surface rather than dropping them into water significantly improve post-release survival and welfare. In aquaculture, oxygen management during summer heat is the primary welfare challenge.
