Largemouth and smallmouth bass are cultured in North America for stocking programmes and increasingly for food production, with welfare needs specific to their predatory and territorial biology.
Largemouth bass are apex predators in their natural environment and their aggressive territorial nature makes group culture inherently welfare-challenging. Crowding causes fighting, fin damage, and chronic stress. The species natural lifestyle is profoundly different from tank conditions. As food production aquaculture scales, welfare standards specific to these species need development before bad practices become entrenched.
