Freshwater Bream Welfare in European Pond Aquaculture and Recreational Fisheries

Common bream are farmed in central European pond systems and are a major recreational fishing species, with welfare considerations around crowding in aquaculture and catch-and-release practices in angling.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Bream crowded in harvest nets experience acute hypoxic stress — they gulp at the surface and show distress behaviour as oxygen depletes. High-density aquaculture causes scale loss, fin erosion, and suppressed immune function. In recreational fishing, bream on the bank experience progressive hypoxia, thermoregulatory stress, and injury from hook removal, with welfare outcomes depending strongly on handling time and technique. Fish that swallow hooks (deep hooking) experience particular welfare harm from attempted hook removal. Barbless hooks and rapid wet-handed handling with immediate return to water reduce welfare costs substantially.
