Chinese Soft-Shelled Turtle Welfare in Intensive Aquaculture

Chinese soft-shelled turtles are intensively farmed in China and Taiwan in high-density indoor systems, with welfare challenges unique to reptile aquaculture including temperature management, aggression, and live slaughter.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Crowded soft-shelled turtles inflict serious bite wounds on tank-mates — shell damage, limb amputations, and eye injuries are common at high stocking densities. As ectotherms, turtles in suboptimal temperature ranges experience metabolic suppression and immune failure. The prolonged survival time of turtles after decapitation — sometimes minutes — raises concerns about the duration of consciousness during live slaughter. Transport of live turtles in confined conditions causes dehydration and stress. Reptile welfare is poorly covered by existing aquaculture frameworks, leaving this large sector essentially unregulated for welfare.
