Freshwater turtles are farmed extensively in China and Southeast Asia for food and traditional medicine, with significant welfare concerns related to conditions and slaughter.
Freshwater turtle welfare in aquaculture is a significant concern given their well-developed sensory and cognitive abilities as reptiles. Concrete tank farming at high densities prevents normal behavioral repertoires including basking, burrowing, and natural social spacing. The physical injuries from conspecific aggression in crowded conditions are common. Slaughter methods including live processing are standard in many markets and cause severe suffering. Climate-controlled systems can improve welfare but are not widely used in high-volume production. Conservation concerns about wild turtle populations used to supplement aquaculture stock add a further welfare dimension. Welfare standards for turtle aquaculture are essentially absent in most producing countries.
