Welfare Significance

Koi welfare in garden ponds is often underestimated. These are long-lived, sentient fish with complex physiological and behavioural needs. Poor water quality is the most common welfare failure — causing chronic physiological stress and disease even when fish appear healthy. Regular water testing and appropriate filtration are as important as fish health monitoring.

What You Can Do

Test pond water quality weekly for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH
Ensure filtration is appropriate for your fish stocking density
Never overstock — a general rule is 10cm of fish per 1000 litres as a maximum
Quarantine all new koi for at least 6 weeks before introducing to an established pond
