Koi and Ornamental Fish Welfare in Ponds and Aquaria

Koi and ornamental fish kept in garden ponds and aquaria represent billions of individual fish with welfare needs that are frequently undermet.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Koi welfare in garden ponds and aquaria is compromised most frequently by inadequate water volume, poor filtration, and disease mismanagement. Koi grow much larger than most owners anticipate, rapidly outgrowing ponds that were initially adequate. Overcrowding causes chronic stress, fin damage, and disease susceptibility. Water quality failure from inadequate filtration is the most common cause of fish mortality. Koi herpesvirus is highly contagious and causes mass mortality with no cure. Capture and handling during health treatment causes significant acute stress. The welfare burden of ornamental fish kept without adequate knowledge and resources is enormous given the number of fish affected globally.
