Lobster Welfare: Live Transport and Slaughter Methods

The live transport and slaughter of lobsters raises increasingly significant welfare concerns as scientific evidence for crustacean sentience strengthens.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Boiling lobsters alive causes acute pain responses lasting 0.5-3 minutes before death. Scientific evidence now supports the capacity for pain experience in decapods. Chilling slows movement but does not eliminate consciousness. Electrical stunning with approved devices such as the Crustastun causes immediate insensibility and is considered the highest welfare slaughter method currently available. Welfare-conscious handling during transport — adequate water temperature and oxygen — also significantly reduces pre-slaughter suffering.
