Milkfish Welfare in Southeast Asian Aquaculture

Milkfish (Chanos chanos) is a staple aquaculture species in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Taiwan, farmed in coastal ponds and cages with welfare challenges related to density and traditional management practices.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Milkfish welfare receives little formal attention despite the enormous scale of production and cultural importance of the species. Traditional extensive fishpond culture is relatively low-stress for individual fish but lacks welfare monitoring. Intensive cage culture at high densities causes chronic crowding stress manifesting as increased cortisol, reduced feeding efficiency, and increased disease susceptibility. The traditional market preference for live fish results in prolonged live transport and asphyxiation killing — both welfare concerns as evidence for fish sentience strengthens. Consumer and regulatory pressure for welfare improvements is beginning to reach the milkfish sector through export market requirements.
