Grey mullet are farmed in Mediterranean lagoon and pond systems, with welfare characteristics reflecting their omnivorous, adaptable nature.
Grey mullet in traditional extensive lagoon systems often have reasonable welfare — lower densities, natural food supplementation and complex environments. Intensive pond systems with high stocking densities create crowding stress and water quality challenges. Harvest by seine net causes crowding and physical injury. Mullet's tolerance of environmental variability does not mean welfare is not compromised by extreme conditions — it means their tolerance range is wider.
