Grey Mullet Welfare in Mediterranean Aquaculture

Grey mullet (Mugil cephalus and related species) are farmed in Mediterranean lagoons and ponds, often in extensive systems with lower welfare oversight than intensive species.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Welfare standards for grey mullet are less developed than for premium species. Extensive lagoon systems provide relatively good welfare through space, natural food sources, and low human intervention frequency, but harvest events cause extreme crowding stress. Netting and crowding of mullet during harvest causes visible panic swimming, scale loss, and high cortisol. Electrical stunning before harvest is not yet standard practice. The low economic value per fish reduces incentive for welfare investment relative to salmon or sea bream.
