Blue Mussel Welfare in Rope Aquaculture

Rope-grown blue mussels are one of the most sustainable seafood options, with welfare considerations similar to oysters regarding bivalve sentience and handling.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Blue mussels are bivalves with limited neural organisation, making pain experience in the vertebrate sense unlikely under current scientific understanding. Mechanical handling in harvest machinery causes valve damage and mortality for injured individuals. The environmental footprint of mussel farming is extremely low compared to terrestrial animal production — no land, no fresh water, no feed inputs and net carbon absorption. From a precautionary welfare standpoint, minimising mechanical handling damage is appropriate.
