Proposals to farm octopus commercially have provoked significant welfare debate given the species' advanced cognitive abilities and capacity for suffering.
Octopus welfare in any commercial farming scenario faces fundamental challenges rooted in the species' biology and cognition. As solitary animals, octopuses in proximity to conspecifics experience extreme stress and resort to cannibalism. Their intelligence means they require environmental complexity that is essentially impossible to provide at commercial scale. Confinement in barren tanks causes stereotypic behavior and premature death. Over 40 leading cephalopod scientists signed an open letter opposing commercial octopus farming in 2023 on welfare grounds. While octopuses are not currently covered by all national animal welfare laws, their advanced neurology places them among the most welfare-concerning candidates for farming.
