Current scientific consensus does not confirm that oysters have the neural architecture necessary to experience pain, but research is ongoing. Welfare concerns in oyster production include mortality from disease (OsHV-1 oyster herpesvirus), handling injuries during grading and harvesting, air exposure causing stress responses, and heat stress during transport. The precautionary principle suggests minimising unnecessary suffering even where sentience is uncertain.
