The aerial respiration capacity of pangasius has led to higher stocking densities than would be welfare-appropriate for gill-only fish. Chronic sub-optimal dissolved oxygen causes immune suppression and stress even without acute mortality. The access to air breathing for emergency oxygen does not eliminate welfare harm from poor water quality. Welfare-focused pangasius farming maintains adequate dissolved oxygen in water rather than relying on air-breathing tolerance as a welfare justification for overcrowding. Certified pangasius farms with regular aeration and water quality monitoring provide better welfare than uncertified intensive systems.
