European Perch Welfare in Freshwater Aquaculture

European perch is an increasingly farmed freshwater species with growing market interest as a premium table fish and specific welfare requirements as a predatory species.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Perch welfare in aquaculture is challenged by the species' sensitivity to handling and its predatory behavior. Size grading to reduce cannibalism requires repeated handling that causes acute stress. Larval rearing requires live prey (Artemia and copepods) as perch do not readily accept inert diets at early stages. Transition to pelleted diets at juvenile stage involves a welfare-relevant hunger period. Water temperature management is critical as perch are eurythermal but perform best at 18-22 degrees Celsius. Recirculating aquaculture systems enable year-round production but require excellent water quality management to maintain welfare. Humane slaughter using electrical stunning followed by spiking is achievable for perch.
