Pikeperch is increasingly farmed in European RAS systems and its welfare requirements, including space, water quality and social needs, are being actively researched.
Welfare concerns in intensive pikeperch RAS include stress from overcrowding, fin erosion from aggressive interactions, sensory deprivation in bare tank environments, and handling stress during routine management. Water quality requirements including low ammonia, adequate oxygen and appropriate temperature are critical. Providing hiding structures and low light conditions improves welfare in production settings.
