Welfare Considerations

Smelt welfare is challenging due to their extreme handling sensitivity combined with their commercial importance. Their oxygen demand is high and they are prone to scale loss and skin abrasion from handling — even careful handling causes significant welfare harm compared to less sensitive species. Live bait welfare presents a particularly difficult challenge — smelt maintained in live wells for ice fishing face poor oxygen and elevated temperatures that compromise welfare throughout their use. Rapid stunning before slaughter eliminates extended suffering.
