Red sea bream (madai) is one of Japan's most culturally important farmed fish, with welfare challenges in intensive sea cage and pond systems related to crowding, disease, and slaughter practices.
Red sea bream welfare in intensive aquaculture is challenged by the species aggressive, territorial behaviour under crowding. High stocking densities cause fin erosion, body injuries, and chronic stress. Lymphocystis causes visible, welfare-compromising skin lesions. Conventional slaughter without pre-stunning causes prolonged awareness. As one of Japan's most prestigious table fish, there is market capacity for premium welfare-certified products. Development of species-specific welfare standards, optimal density guidelines, and humane slaughter methods for red sea bream would be a significant welfare advance in Asian aquaculture.
