Red Seabream Welfare in Japanese Aquaculture

Red seabream (madai) is Japan's most culturally significant farmed fish, with a well-developed aquaculture sector and growing attention to welfare standards for this highly valued species.

Welfare Considerations

Red seabream in crowded sea cages experience fin and scale damage from aggressive interactions and contact with net walls. Viral nervous necrosis (VNN) causes neurological signs including spiralling, loss of equilibrium, and mass mortality in affected cohorts. Pre-slaughter crowding in reduced-water holding tanks causes acute hypoxic stress and panic behaviour. Ike-jime — a Japanese technique involving a spike to the hindbrain followed by spinal cord destruction — is considered one of the most humane fish slaughter methods available and is increasingly promoted in Japan and globally.
