Red snapper is one of the most important commercial and recreational fish species in the Gulf of Mexico, with welfare considerations across commercial fishing, recreational catch-and-release, and emerging aquaculture.
Red snapper welfare in recreational fisheries is significantly affected by barotrauma — the internal injuries caused by rapid decompression as fish are brought from depths of 20-100 metres. Swim bladder overexpansion, stomach eversion, and internal haemorrhage cause severe injury in fish returned from significant depth. Descender devices that return fish to depth at pressure can reverse mild barotrauma and significantly improve survival. Evidence-based catch-and-release practices including immediate descending of barotrauma-affected fish represent a practical welfare improvement for millions of released snapper annually.
