Sablefish welfare in developing aquaculture systems faces challenges from housing a deep-water species in shallow surface facilities. Their adaptation to cold, high-pressure deep-water environments may mean that surface aquaculture conditions cause chronic physiological stress. As a relatively new aquaculture species, feeding optimization, stocking density tolerance, and handling stress thresholds are not yet well characterized, meaning current practice may inadvertently compromise welfare. The slow growth rate creates economic pressure to maximize density that may conflict with welfare requirements.
