Freshwater hatchery welfare for salmon begins at egg incubation, where low dissolved oxygen or fungal disease can cause mortality in developing embryos. First feeding failure represents a welfare crisis for individual fry that cannot transition to exogenous feeding. High rearing densities during the parr stage create chronic social stress, reduce access to refuge and increase disease transmission. Vaccination procedures, though essential, impose acute handling stress. Photoperiod manipulation to control smoltification timing may disrupt biological rhythms. Each of these stressors individually has manageable welfare cost, but their cumulative effect during a critical developmental period can compromise the long-term health and welfare of fish throughout production.
