Sea urchins are farmed and ranched for their roe (uni) globally. Their sentience status is uncertain, but precautionary welfare measures are increasingly recommended.
The welfare status of sea urchins remains scientifically uncertain. The UK Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022 does not currently include echinoderms, though the scientific evidence is ambiguous rather than clearly negative. Precautionary welfare measures include maintaining optimal water quality, minimising handling, and using rapid chilling methods prior to processing rather than live dissection. As the evidence base grows, welfare standards should be updated accordingly.
