Seaweed Farming: Welfare and Environmental Considerations

Seaweed aquaculture is a rapidly growing sector with minimal direct animal welfare concerns but significant benefits for marine animal welfare through environmental services.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Seaweed is not sentient and has no direct welfare needs. However, seaweed aquaculture provides considerable indirect welfare benefits to marine animals. Seaweed farms create habitat complexity that supports invertebrate and fish communities. Local reduction of ocean acidification reduces welfare impacts on shell-forming organisms. Dense seaweed cultures remove nitrogen and phosphorus from coastal waters, reducing harmful algal blooms that can cause mass mortality of marine life. Expanding seaweed aquaculture as a component of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems improves environmental quality for fish and invertebrates in the same area.
