Live boiling and live freezing cause conscious exposure to lethal conditions for an unknown but potentially significant period before death. As evidence for crustacean pain capacity grows, the welfare case for developing and adopting humane slaughter methods becomes stronger. The challenge is implementing welfare-positive methods at the commercial scale needed for the global shrimp industry.
