Red snapper and related lutjanid species are emerging aquaculture targets in tropical Asia and the Pacific, with welfare protocols still in development.
Lutjanid welfare in sea cage aquaculture faces the inherent challenges of farming highly territorial, carnivorous reef fish at commercial densities. Aggression causes fin damage, scale loss, and chronic stress that reduces growth and increases disease susceptibility. Feeding management is particularly important - irregular feeding schedules increase competition and aggression. The relatively limited research base for lutjanid welfare compared to salmon or carp means that current production practices are often derived from experience rather than welfare science. Developing species-specific welfare indicators and evidence-based stocking and feeding guidelines is an important step for this growing sector.
