Snapper welfare in cage aquaculture reflects the species active, predatory lifestyle that is poorly accommodated by conventional cage systems. Fin damage and abrasions from cage walls during stress responses are common welfare problems. The live food fish trade imposes extreme welfare burdens: transport of live fish to distant markets causes prolonged stress, and cyanide stunning used in some wild capture operations causes neurological damage and slow death in many fish. Transitioning the snapper sector toward more humane capture and aquaculture practices with appropriate cage design, stocking density management, and humane slaughter represents significant welfare improvement potential at scale.
