Striped bass and hybrid striped bass are increasingly farmed in US cage aquaculture. Their welfare needs in intensive systems differ significantly from traditional finfish species.
Striped bass welfare in cage culture is compromised by the sensitivity of the species to environmental extremes and handling stress. The narrow thermal preference zone of hybrid striped bass means that summer water temperatures in inland cages can exceed the species comfort range, causing chronic thermal stress. Crowding for routine management including grading, vaccination and harvest causes cortisol spikes that suppress immune function for days. The use of prophylactic antibiotics indicates that disease pressure in some systems is chronically elevated, reflecting underlying welfare deficits including poor water quality and overcrowding.
