Vietnam is the world's largest producer of striped catfish, and improving welfare across the intensive production system is an increasing focus for exporters and certification bodies.
Welfare concerns in intensive catfish production include very high stocking densities causing chronic stress, water quality fluctuations, handling injuries during grading and harvest, and lack of effective stunning before slaughter at processing plants. Some certification schemes now include welfare criteria for Vietnamese catfish production.
