Tilapia welfare challenges centre on extreme stocking densities used in intensive pond systems, inadequate water quality management, and disease burdens in poorly managed operations. Consumer demand for cheap protein creates commercial pressure that compromises welfare. Certification schemes are available but cover only a fraction of global production.
