Egypt is one of the worlds largest tilapia producers. Welfare in semi-intensive cage and pond systems reflects both local management standards and global sustainability pressures.
Egyptian tilapia welfare challenges are driven by water quality degradation in cage culture systems. Agricultural and municipal pollution entering Nile Delta fish culture areas causes periodic hypoxia and chemical contamination that cause chronic stress and mass mortality events. Harvest methods concentrating fish before asphyxiation slaughter cause prolonged suffering. Improving cage siting away from pollution sources, implementing aeration systems, and adopting percussive or electrical stunning before slaughter would significantly improve welfare.
