Turbot welfare in intensive tank systems is challenged by their flat body form that requires adequate horizontal substrate area for resting. High stocking densities violate this requirement, causing fish to pile on top of each other, damaging skin through abrasion and restricting access to optimal water layers near the substrate. Providing horizontal substrate area proportional to body surface area rather than volumetric density calculations better captures turbot welfare needs. Their bottom-dwelling biology means standard welfare metrics developed for pelagic species require adaptation.
