The welfare trajectory for farmed shrimp is improving, albeit slowly, driven by accumulating scientific evidence of crustacean pain capacity and increasing certification requirements. The elimination of eyestalk ablation from broodstock management is the most welfare-significant improvement being sought. Several companies are now using hormone priming techniques that achieve similar reproductive stimulation without eyestalk removal. Improved pond management reducing chronic crowding stress and optimising water quality has both welfare and production benefits. Harvest methods that minimise stress — including ice slurry immersion rather than dry harvesting — are being adopted by progressive producers. The scale of shrimp production means that even marginal per-animal welfare improvements aggregate to enormous reductions in total suffering.
