White seabream (Diplodus sargus) is an emerging Mediterranean aquaculture species. Welfare standards for this species are less developed than for gilthead seabream and sea bass.
Welfare challenges for white seabream centre on intraspecific aggression — size grading to maintain uniform populations is essential for reducing fin damage and feeding competition. Territorial behaviour under high stocking densities causes chronic stress evidenced by elevated cortisol and immune suppression. Species-specific welfare indicators have not yet been validated, requiring adaptation from gilthead seabream research. Humane slaughter protocols from gilthead seabream are applicable.
