Yellowtail snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus) are increasingly farmed in Caribbean and tropical systems. Their welfare needs centre on water quality, stocking density, and handling stress.
Welfare indicators for yellowtail snapper include swimming behaviour, fin condition, and appetite. Chronic crowding causes stereotypic circling and suppressed immune function. Best welfare practice involves stocking densities below 15kg/m3, gradual feeding habituation, and minimising net handling events. Slaughter by ice slurry immersion followed by spiking is recommended over live removal from water.
